This is always one of the best times of the season. The pre-season work is done. The squad is in place. And the coaches are optimistic before the first ball is kicked. So as our u9 Pumas awoke this morning, they were full of energy as they knew their league season was about to commence…

And the opening game of the 2023-2024 saw us taking on our old mates from Ladybridge Leopards – with the trip over to ESSA Academy in order to do it – so as the players started arriving, there was a good mood in the air. That may have been helped by the fact that the weather was glorious but we’d take it whatever. A big travelling contingent had made the journey to support us and as the players were put through their warm-up’s, the message from the coaches was clear – work hard, do what you’ve been learning over the summer and most of it – enjoy it! The whistle went to start our season and by the end of this game, we’re all more than excited for the rest of it!

Because this one was a cracker! Early on it was the Leopards doing all the pressing and as the County players grew into the game, we started to take over. Some of the passing and tackling by both sets of players out there was a joy to behold – and if both teams can keep that up all year, then they are sure to have good campaigns…

By the end of it, the County fans were the ones cheering loudest – but all of the players that got onto that pitch can take credit for the entertainment they had just provided. The kids in blue kept their heads when things looked against them and together, they pulled themselves through it – and that’s what we’ll need to see for every game now. They’ve proved they can do it for sure…

Freddie Furness was awarded the Man of the Match for his overall efforts and great goal – but they can all go home knowing they played their part and if they keep this up, we’ll all be smiling come next May. There was also a competitive debut goal for young Raphael Mapira as well – so we were all happy about that! A massive thanks to Ladybridge Leopards for being such warm hosts and we wish you all the very best for the coming season – but today was all about County and as we made our way home, we were all very aware of how well we’d done here today. That’s what it’s all about…
